SN - Categories of Special Needs

What you need to know to truly better respond.

About the Course

As Rita Pearson so eloquently and passionately puts it at the outset of the course, “Every Kid Needs a Champion”, and most especially if you are a kid with a special educational need; then you need a teacher that will champion, advocate for and help support and meet your ‘need’!

Special Education Teachers, you are those champions, and here at CPD College we have scoped, engineered and assembled a course that will help you better understand and support children assessed as having a special need.

We help you get to grips with the many aspects of this huge area, enabling you to know and understand the details of the many categories of SEN. From effectively supporting the child with Down Syndrome to supporting the child with dyslexia. We cover the many categories of special needs as set out across the modules below.

The course ranges across many bases, to include:

  • The categories of special educational needs, from autism and dyslexia, to ADHD, Down Syndrome, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Speech and language disorders and more
  • Strategies and approaches to support each area of need

……………. these and so much more.

Not only that, but we link you up with 200+ articles and advice sheets across the broad spectrum that is special education to include: breaking the link between SEN and low attainment, speaking/reading/writing for the SEN child, special needs response pack, behaviour management resources, ASD good practice guide, managing social/emotional/behavioural difficulties, understanding memory difficulties etc. etc. to name but seven of the items.

If you have a SEN role in your school, then this course is definitely for you.

So many categories, so much to know! But it is the duty of ALL to really know and understand the child with a SEN, so that we can more effectively begin to organise and deploy a proper response that delivers daily for their perceived and assessed educational needs, both in mainstream and in support settings.

Come to know, and then you can better respond.

"This course provided a wealth of much-needed information. As teachers, we never know the needs of a child until they walk through our door. It's important to have an understanding of SEN and strategies to assist. Some of this material I may never have to draw on and more of it will be my go-to information and a great starting point if I am faced with a child with SEN."  Claire, 2022
