Learning outcomes
In this course we aim to:
  • Provide an operational understanding of the workings of AI
  • Explore various AI tools showcasing exemplars of productive application across the curriculum
  • Apply AI Tools to empower lesson planning, differentiation, assessment and the creation of exciting and enriching teaching and learning resources
  • Address ethical considerations on the use of AI by teachers
  • Demonstrate how AI can support planning and administrative tasks
  • Educate teachers on AI literacy
  • Support teachers to contribute to training, policies & procedures for the effective use of AI in their school
  • Provide teachers with a ‘good practice’ model for using AI
  • Communicate National/EU strategy/policy on the use of AI in education
Modules
01 - Introduction to AI and Education: We explore how AI is currently being used to support teaching, learning and assessment in primary schools and reflect on the associated benefits and challenges. The first introduction to the power of ChatGPT is showcased through demonstrations showing how it can support incisive, high-quality language planning, teaching & assessment e.g. creating writing prompts to promote creativity in writing/producing exemplar writing within a genre to guide students/generating poems that example and showcase a style/producing quality oral language conversation starters on themes/outputting tiered comprehension questions/generating assessment checklists & rubrics/levelling a piece of text for a child with a special educational need etc. To provide some context, we reference the national strategy for AI and the current EU policy on the role of AI in teaching and learning. The first of our 'AI will blow your mind' sections (we have one in each module) demonstrates the 'wow factor' resulting from the incredible AI tools that are out there to support teachers.
02 - AI Explored: We explore the evolution of AI and its impact on teaching and learning. The incredible role that AI can play in supporting our planning tasks is demonstrated in detail. We delve into the concept of Artificial Intelligence versus Human Intelligence and reflect on the best way forward. Watch out for our AI-generated guests engaging in interviews with real people - what? Yes, this is the AI world we live in. In this module, we also present a number of AI tools and demonstrate how they can be used to create teaching, learning and assessment resources for mathematics, e.g. generate a number of questions to promote 'maths talk' on the topic of the week, e.g. fractions, 3D shapes, weighing etc. AI to produce activities that 'promote playful engagement’ with the maths idea/concept of the week, e.g. playful ideas for fractions, time, money, numbers, etc. AI to generate maths topic posters for the IWB, themed vocabulary lists, e.g. time, assessment questions, etc.
03 - AI Literacy and Ethics: We examine the concept of AI literacy and the ethical guidelines on the use of AI for teachers.  We look into a number of validated AI tools and demonstrate through worked examples how they can be used to help teachers more effectively differentiate by learning objective, by resource, by tiered activity assignment, by question, by activity stations, by methodology, by assessment, by intelligence type etc. AI is the differentiation game changer that supports real, meaningful inclusion.

04 - ChatGPT - The game changer: The astonishing impact that ChatGPT can have in supporting the teacher is demonstrated in this module. We cover;

  • ChatGPT and why it is so popular
  • The limitations and risks associated with ChatGPT
  • How ChatGPT works and how to use it
  • Designing teaching and learning resources (Worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, Videos, etc)
  • Creating engaging learning experiences (Stories, drama, crafts, projects, music, trails etc)
  • Assessments (Higher and lower order assessments and rubrics)
  • Developing differentiated learning activities
  • We showcase, through prompt examples, how ChatGPT can support the generation of learning outcomes on topics
  • Creation of success criteria for a lesson
  • Setting out structured lesson plans
  • Suggesting teaching approaches and methodologies most appropriate to the unit
  • Generating integrated cross-curricular themed STEAM units
  • Developing a variety of assessments for a given lesson, etc.
  • Save so much time on admin tasks (letters, emails, summaries, plans, policies, etc.)
05 - Planning for the future: We review the strengths and limitations of AI for teachers. Look out for the AI-generated characters debating this issue.  We delve into the concept of collaborative intelligence, and the 'teacher in the loop' model is given a reflective examination. These content categories provide a good context for teachers to finish the course in the position of being sufficiently expert to plan for the effective use of AI in their school. This can be done through the design of policies and procedures on the use of AI and the development of a good practice model. We also demonstrate more AI tools to show that the 'wonder and wow' from this new paradigm for education is perhaps only beginning.
