This self-paced on-line course contain detailed information, instruction and suggestions on all the strands and strand units which are covered in our music curriculum. As the title suggests, It may be of particular relevance to teachers who feel challenged when it comes to teaching music in their classrooms. Plentiful examples and use of suggested resources will give teachers an edge when trying to teach music in an exciting and innovative way.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order within an 8 week period (1st July to 22nd August 2008).

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of the course the participant will be presented with their own time record, excercise content and approval by the course facilitator as their CPD record to keep.

• To provide participants with lists of resources and a structured approach to the teaching of music
 
 
   Modules:  
AMU01 - Promotion an understanding of music in the primary school, the content, basic structure and musical elements of the music curriculum. Suggestions on school and classroom planning for music.
AMU02 - Understanding of the first strand: Listening and Responding and its strand units - exploring sounds and listening and responding to music. A close look will be taken at this strand and the musical concepts which are developed. Sample lessons will be examined and suggestions of resources made.
AMU03 - Understanding of the second strand: Performing and its strand units - song singing (unison / simple part singing), literacy and playing instruments. A close look will be taken at this strand and the musical concepts which are developed. Sample lessons will be examined and suggestions of resources made.
AMU04 - Understanding of the third strand: Composing and its strand units - improvising and creating and talking about and recording compositions. A close look will be taken at this strand and the musical concepts which are developed. Sample lessons will be examined and suggestions of resources made.
AMU05 - Understanding of the different approaches/methodologies used. How to assess children in this particular subject area. An understanding of the sequence which might be followed when teaching certain aspects of music i.e. rhythm or melody. A list of resources for listening samples and how to use the internet to enhance music lessons. An overview from Junior Infants to Sixth Class on what needs to be taught in each class grouping and how to organise it.
