Thinking Skills: Teaching thinking should be the most fundamental aspect of education and training at all levels.
 
 
 


This self-paced on-line course will cover 7 particular areas of content:

1. The Focused Thinking Programme (ages 10 to adult)
2. The Six Thinking Hats (ages 4 to adult)
3. Creativity (ages 4 to adult)
4. Creative Thinking techniques and Lateral Thinking (ages 10 to adult)
5. Application to the Curriculum.
6. Relevant supplementary reading.
7. Concentration.

Supplementary reading consists of the history of thinking, brain development, traditional logic forms, inductive and deductive reasoning, Bias Forms, Critical Thinking and simple concentration exercises.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order between July 1st and August 27th 2010.

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of the course the participant will be presented with their own time record, excercise content and approval by the course facilitator as their CPD record to keep.

   Learning outcomes:  
Participants will better understand that when children have opportunities to play with ideas in different situations and with a variety of resources, they discover connections and come to new and better understandings and ways of doing things and that adult support in this process enhances their ability to think critically and ask questions.

Course participants will also be better equipped with the knowledge and understandings necessary to create & support thinking skills orientated classroom environment.

 
 
   Modules:  
01 - Understanding the different modes of thinking: Critical, Lateral, Parallel, Creative, and Constructive thinking. More importantly though is the fact that they will learn the nine basic tools of thinking focus and be able to teach these skills simply in the classroom.
02 - Development and understanding of three more focus skills: Alternative Focus, Brainstorm Focus and Consequence Focus.
03 - Development and understanding of three more focus skills: Aims Focus, Viewpoint Focus and Priority Focus
04 - Understanding of lateral and creative thinking processes and it’s essential ingredients
05 - ‘The Six Thinking Hats’, their purpose and application within the curriculum.
