Poetry & Story – a rich context for the development of literacy skills in our English Language Curriculum
 
 
 


This self-paced on-line course focuses on opportunities to develop literacy skills through exposure to and experience of a wide range of stimulating poetry. Supporting teachers by providing practical teaching methods for poetry based on whole class, group, paired and individual teaching. Developing children’s literacy skills through exposure to and experience of a wide range of stimulating literature with supporting activities which are both diversified and challenging. Practical ideas, tips and lists for for fostering literacy through the creation and appreciation of poetry & story for the busy classroom teacher.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order between July 1st and August 27th 2010.

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of the course the participant will be presented with their own time record, excercise content and approval by the course facilitator as their CPD record to keep.

   Learning outcomes:  
Teachers who participate in the course will have a greater understanding of the value of poetry and story as a conduit through which to develop literacy skills. The knowledge and insights gained / explored will under pin the organization of poetry and story sessions in the coming year.
 
 
   Modules:  
01 - Exploring the place of poetry within our English language curriculum.
02 - Participants will have a fuller understanding of the wealth of opportunities to develop literacy skills through exposure to and experience of a wide range of stimulating poetry.
03 - Participants will acquire basic strategies for supporting pupil experience of poetry by providing practical teaching methods for poetry based on whole class, group, paired and individual teaching.
04 - Participants will explore how the twin mediums of poetry & story can be deployed to develop children’s literacy skills through exposure to and experience of a wide range of stimulating literature with supporting activities which are both diversified and challenging.
05 - Participants will be exposed to a wealth of practical ideas, tips and lists for fostering literacy through the creation and appreciation of poetry & story for the busy classroom teacher
