Fifth & Sixth Class Education: The teaching approaches to the many text types in English and various approaches to teaching maths and S.E.SE.

In this self-paced on-line course we begin by looking at the defining principles and features of the primary school curriculum. We explore the nature of learning and look at assessment as a central starting point to teaching and learning and look at short and long term planning as fundamental to proper curriculum delivery. We will work through various text types in English in order to better understand their defining features as they relate to childrens’ reading and writing.
We will examine some of the best approaches to concept building in mathematics supplemented by quality teaching resource materials, followed by lots of creative approaches & ideas for visual arts and activities for all areas of the P.E. programme in Fifth & Sixth class.

A ‘Thematic’ approach to S.E.S.E. will be explored and promoted.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order between July 1st and August 27th 2010.

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of the course the participant will be presented with their own time record, excercise content and approval by the course facilitator as their CPD record to keep.

   Learning outcomes:
Course participants will know, appreciate and apply the defining curriculum principles that should underpin their teaching. Teachers will acquire ideas and approaches for the progression of competence in reading and writing within the various text types in English. Participating teachers will also meet some new ideas, approaches, understandings & resources that will inform & underpin their teaching of Mathematics. A thematic approach to units of work in S.E.S.E. should be more prominent as a result of participation on this course. Finally, teachers will have a greater wealth of ideas for lessons in the Visual arts and P.E.

   Modules:
01 - The defining principles and features of the primary school curriculum & exploration of the nature of learning and look at assessment as a central starting point to teaching and learning. Short and long term planning as fundamental to proper curriculum delivery.
02 - Exploring how children need to be encouraged to read widely, analyze and evaluate written texts, and develop their ability to make meaning out of increasingly challenging text. The importance of training students to think critically about what they read, and understand that written language varies according to context.
03 - This module raises some questions and key points about the teaching and learning of mathematics in our primary schools and examines the strategies and resources that teachers could best utilise to underpin the teaching of the concepts in fifth and sixth class.
04 - Exploring organised thematic work units as an approach to teaching & learning in primary school, which often involves various and sometimes unrelated tasks being carried out under the umbrella of a common title or "Theme" in S.E.S.E.
05 - In fifth and sixth class education, we look at the twin subjects of Visual Arts and P.E. as two subjects that particularly appeal to children and explore practical activities that can be completed under each subject. Teachers will appreciate how these high-interest subjects can provide very strong cross curricular / integration links to other subject areas.
