SS02 - Questioning Techniques

The Potential For Great Learning Starts With Questions, Not Answers

Teachers use questioning as a mode of teaching, learning and assessing students’ understanding of texts. Across subjects, teachers utilise questioning to promote memory, inquiry, stimulation of thinking and in-depth processing of concepts. Questioning is a stimulus for student talk, engagement, and quest for new knowledge. Questioning it could be said - is the master key to understanding.

But I too have a question? Have you a complete rounded knowledge, understanding and mastery of the questions and questioning techniques that are intrinsic to learning and that pervade our classrooms daily? If not, then this 1 hour seminar is for you and your staff.

In this seminar we take an in-depth look at questioning skills and the questioning techniques that should that should underpin and drive classroom teaching and inquiry. We explore the purpose of classroom questions, the types and range of questions teachers should be asking, and suggest questioning techniques and formats that teachers can draw upon during their questioning sessions with students.
As a result
of seminar attendance, participation and engagement, teachers will acquire the detailed knowledge and understanding, together with a range of questioning techniques and skills, necessary for daily quality questioning sessions in the classroom, where questions are derived as appropriate, from the six cognitive domains of
 Blooms taxonomy.
The seminar is delivered to the whole staff in a classroom setting through the Interactive Whiteboard using the seminar DVD or by logging into the course online at, and using the username and password enclosed with the DVD.
There will be pauses on occasion in the presentation to enable teachers to complete written ‘Stop & Think Tasks’.
There is also a comprehensive seminar handout, a copy of which needs to be photocopied for each attendee and distributed at the start of the seminar. The handout includes guidance notes for the seminar leader, participant notes and resources to support practical implementation of questioning techniques on completion of the seminar.
There is also full online support with access to the seminar itself, all relevant materials and a discussion forum on the topic and its implementation.
We hope that you enjoy this seminar and find it beneficial.
